LiveNation/TicketMaster merger approved!

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Breaking news, the Department of Justice is set to approve the LiveNation/TicketMaster merger!  The merger, originally announced in February 2009, finally got through, but it is still unclear what terms and conditions will have to come with it.

Look for TicketMaster to have to divest some of its assets (probably TicketsNow) and Live Nation may have to sell some of their venues, probably to AEG Live.

How does everyone feel about this merger?

Live Nation Ticketmaster?

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

The WSJ reported about an hour ago that Ticketmaster and Live Nation are near a merger.  Although I was initially surprised considering Live Nation is aggressively going after the ticketing space, I think this deal makes sense for both parties but may be very troubling for the independent music community.

Unfortunately, depressed market valuations have pressured both companies to pursue new methods of value creation.  A combined Ticketmaster and Live Nation could result in millions of revenue and cost synergies.  It is likely that combining the world’s largest concert promoter with the world’s leader in ticketing and platform will be subject to anti-trust review, but who knows what the outcome will be in this environment.

One comment I thought was interesting is that the WSJ reported that a combined company could, “package artists in new ways, for example, allowing corporations such as a cellphone provider to sponsor a concert tour and to sell an exclusive download of a song.”

I’m not really sure if that’s an accurate conclusion to this merger as Live Nation or the major labels in conjunction with Ticketmaster could already do this, nevertheless Live Nation Ticketmaster would definitely be a force to reckon with.  Will this lead to more M&A; activity in the live music space, what is the next step for AEG?
