Aviary Myna… or maybe just a post about Ice Cream

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Aviary MynaHere you go:

Aviary: “…a mission to make creation accessible to artists of all genres, from graphic design to audio editing.”
Myna:  ”…remix music tracks and audio clips. Apply sound effects and record your own voice or instrument!”

Not too bad, huh? I always wanted to be a creator. I like to create stuff, like blog entries… and ice cream. Bet you didn’t know that about me did you? You’re saying, “Oh Chris, I didn’t know you made ice cream.” So I say back, “Oh reader, you got me all wrong.” The only time I ever created ice cream was when I was a kid and entirely confused why my mom was putting salt in the ice cream maker. It took me years, actually I just read about it, to figure out, why salt? Well, simple answer, it wasn’t going in the ice cream. If your confused, then watch the video on how to make homemade ice cream:

Personally, I like vanilla or chocolate. I’m pretty simple when it comes to flavors, unless it’s soft serve. Nothing holding me back on soft serve, except coffee flavor, not a fan. I like banana, blackberry, blueberry, berry berry, Montana, red, spring time smell, and a nice summer breeze at the beach. I also like making my own James Bond scenes with my personal camera. I’m looking for evil villains, so if you’ve got the skills, I’ve got the bills. Actually, I don’t have the bills, it just rhymed. You just get to bring the skills… I guess I’ll bring the beer.

Well, I hope you’re excited as I am. I’m looking forward to testing Myna and recording my experiences through screencasts and YouTube just for your viewing pleasure.

Maybe I’ll sing a song for you or cry uncontrollably. In the meantime, here’s a video from Aviary’s site:

“A Journey Worth Taking” – NPR’s stream of Joanna Newsom live in D.C.

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Before we get down to business here, let me just say that this recording‘s version of “The Book of Right On” is KILLER! Joanna and the band take it a hair down-tempo from The Milk-Eyed Mender. Vocal-phrasing is different from the album. JN mixes up the rhythmic delivery of her voice enough to surprise the listener but not take away from the tune’s original integrity. The small ensemble’s tendency to swing hard, very hard, is accentuated by JN’s triplet figures on the harp.

I love the idea of NPR doing a remote broadcast and streaming it over the internet, but I’m intrigued even more by the live chat going on. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to where you’ll see the “Cover It Live” embedded chat. Now, the actual content of the chat didn’t floor me…basically chatter about what participants are supposed to be doing/looking at, followed by some fairly informed fan-talk. And, as far as I can tell, all of these lil’ live bloggers were tuned into the internet stream, and not present at the Sixth St. and I Historic Synagogue in D.C.

How cool would that be, though, if they were blogging at the venue? Think about a piece of technology that would actually allow you to creep on people ten feet away. Na, just kidding about the creeping. There is a Foursquare related app called Meet Gatsby that allows you to text people eating in the same restaurant. But I think live chatting with people at an event or in an unusual location would be interesting. How about an underground cavern? A cruise ship? A huge concert festival?

USB 3.0 and the Music Industry

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

USB 3.0 and the music industryI wanted to start a discussion on one of our soon to be, but basically here, new technologies. What do you think USB 3.0 will do for the music industry?

For example, music and video downloads, recording interfaces, live sound, digital instruments. Is the industry going to lose money or gain money, is one specialty going to advance over the next?

Share your thoughts, experiences, ideas, and predictions (or whatever).

For those who don’t know about SuperSpeed USB here are a few bullet points from USB.org.

  • SuperSpeed USB has a 5 Gbps signaling rate offering 10x performance increase over Hi-Speed USB.
  • SuperSpeed USB is a Sync-N-Go technology that minimizes user wait-time.
  • SuperSpeed USB will provide Optimized Power Efficiency. No device polling and lower active and idle power requirements.
  • SuperSpeed USB is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. Devices interoperate with USB 2.0 platforms. Hosts support USB 2.0 legacy devices.
