NYU vs. Columbia Battle of the Bands

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

What an event, folks!

April 23rd – the throw-down of the year. 2 NYU bands, 2 Columbia bands. We saw quite the gamut of people, of music, of life – a jazz influenced rock band featuring three Columbia baby-faced freshmen known as Capital; a Columbia grad student ensemble featuring electronic violin known as El Diablo Robotico; an NYU pop rock tour-de force known as The Middle Eight; an eclectic group of NYU musicians known as Condom Pocket.

Everyone really tore the house down in their own way. At the end, we held a vote by crowd noise to determine which band would come away with the prize of a meeting with GigMaven friend and veteran tour manager, Chris. When the crowd noise was too close (see Florida, 2000) between two bands,Capital and The Middle Eight, we split the room to get a head-count of supporters. After a Middle Eight supporter hurdled an insult at me for saying the vote was too close, I triumphantly awarded the victory to the rookies, Capital. What an upset victory!

Here are some pictures from the show:

Earth day! Green tips for musicians!

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

In celebration of Earth Day, we have been sending out weekly tips to our musicians on how to be better to Mother Earth.  Just to give everyone an idea of some of these tips, I will be posting them on our blog and updating this post as we share our resident Green expert, Kate Harrison’s tips:

  • Print your logo on organic cotton t-shirts, recycled plastic frisbees or other eco-friendly paraphernalia. There are green versions of almost anything you can think of just a click away
  • Do what Jack Johnson did and join 1% For the Planet. By giving just one percent of your profits to environmental organizations you join a community of non-profits and companies making a difference, and show fans you care
  • Help fans carpool to your concerts like the band Guster does. They partnered with Reverb to green their tour, but you can use a site like Pickup Pal to help fans help each other

GigMaven Podcast: Kittens Ablaze

Monday, April 20th, 2009

If you’re looking for a good time, why not light some cats on fire? … or you can just check out the six-piece Americana indie rock band, Kittens Ablaze. I had the opportunity to talk to Kittens Ablaze over Skype and they played a tune (This Machine is Dying) for me. It was interesting listening to some of Kittens Ablaze’s experiences. For example, broken cellos, bloody hands, beer and demons, and performing at bars that anti-promote.

GigMaven and the Deli’s Best of NYC Festival!

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

We’re proud to be a part of the Deli’s Best of NYC Festival!  This event is being held from Wednesday, May 6th to Sunday, May 10th.

This festival is a result of a poll that the The Deli organized between December 2008 and January 2009, “The Best of NYC 2008 Poll,” which involved their writers, readers and a selected jury of NYC music promoters, bloggers, and other taste makers.

The results (a list of 65 NYC based artists) can be found here. This festival was organized to give additonal exposure to the artists who were included in that list. All of these bands will also be featured in the Spring 2009 issue of The Deli, out in mid-April.

Guest Post: Kate Harrison, Green Expert

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

You may be wondering what a green wedding author is doing on this site, but the answer is simple.  With over 2.5 million weddings a year in the United States, weddings are often the bread and butter for many musicians.  In addition to being lucrative (average cost of 4 hour set = $3,000+), weddings are a lot of fun to play and offer great exposure.

However, a lot of what I have learned in the wedding business applies to venues as well. With over 80% of consumers looking for eco-friendly options, learning how to green your business’s operations could be the key to making it through tough economic times and developing a loyal following.

In honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, I will be offering a few tips and tricks to help musicians and music venues differentiate themselves in the marketplace while reducing their environmental footprint. These tips will be included this month in the GigMaven newsletters to musicians and venues.

-Kate

Kate L. Harrison is a lawyer, author and environmental advocate.  She wrote The Green Bride Guide: How to Plan an Earth-friendly Wedding on Any Budget and founded The Green Bride Guide after planning her own green wedding in 2007.
