GigMaven Success: ReLLiM

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009
ReLLiM

It’s always nice to tell the tale of a GigMaven artist.

ReLLiM, a 7 piece classic rock group, booked a gig with Mill Street Bar and Grille in Pontiac, Michigan. In addition to getting paid after their performance, they were immediately offered another show. But that’s not all. Just from playing this single show, ReLLiM was also offered a gig sponsored by Chrysler that drew thousands of people. And to top things off, ReLLiM was able to grab a slot in The WoodWard Dream Cruise.

This is an excellent example of how a hard-working band like ReLLiM used GigMaven, and was able not just to book a gig, but also to find great success beyond that!

Best to ReLLiM… give them a listen at www.gigmaven.com/rellim.

NYC Music Tech Meetup

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

I stopped by the NYC Music Tech Meetup hosted by Seth Hillinger tonight.  This meetup was first started at CMJ ’08 and Seth’s done a good job of keeping it going.

Tonight’s presenters were:

DubFiler-is drop.io for DJs.  DubFiler was created by a DJ, Cory Maass, for DJs.    It currently enables private mp3 sharing and downloading for DJs to share their music with other DJs and friends.  Cory is working on adding support for other files like video.  I think the DJ space is a great niche to build tools for as the success of Beatport and Resident Advisor illustrate that DJs are a vibrant, web-savvy community.

Musebin-Musebin actually launched at the first NYC Music Tech meetup and it’s nice to see how much they have grown since then.  Musebin provides twitter style music reviews limited to 140 characters.  They uses a digg-style popularity system to track which reviews are the most popular.

As Musebin aggregates more data, they could provide content for sites that currently do not have user reviews.  I think it makes sense to have a single web destination to aggregate reviews and then power other sites that need this content.

They mentioned they are looking to expand into other verticals, would be interesting if they expanded to movies, products, restaurants, etc.  Definitely a lot of verticals out there to work with.

Get your music played in the lobby of the New GEM Hotels

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

We’re proud to announce that we will be accepting band submissions via GigMaven for the GEM Hotel’s “Rooms for Tunes” program.  You can apply by going to GEM Hotel’s GigMaven profile here.

The “Rooms for Tunes” program is open to bands and solo artists who live or perform in the Chelsea, Midtown or SoHo areas of NYC that are interested in having their music showcased in a lobby of one of the GEM Hotels and if you are choosen, you get a free room for a night!  Submissions are through May 31, 2009 and all winners will be notified by June 22, 2009.

We are always looking for innovative ways to help GigMaven musicians get more exposure and we felt like it would super cool to have your music playing in a boutique hotel and you also get a free night’s stay.

We’re excited to be able to present this opportunity to GigMaven musicians and love to help out other new and hip companies in NYC.

Who Knew? Taylor Swift has Big Balls

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

We recently started looking for new interns to help us spread the word about GigMaven. Last summer, we had two great interns, Brent (who is still helping us out) and Sharon, both of whom stepped up and dealt with a broad array of simple and complex tasks with persistence and dedication.

I am also humbled, day in and day out, by my incredible team that never ceases to impress me with their ability to handle adversity and find creative solutions to problems.

It’s funny because I had a conversation today with one of my developers about what we look for in job candidates, and this NY Times article really nailed what we were talking about:

“Take chances on passionate people early” and “youth over experience”

Scott Borchetta, a country-music exec in Nashville, tells a story about Taylor Swift, who he has backed since she was only 15 years old, when the two of them visited a radio station in Tennessee.

“Often they just say hello for a few minutes and don’t let a brand-new artist on the air,” Mr. Borchetta recalled. “But they liked one of Taylor’s songs and told her so. Without missing a beat, she replied: ‘Thank you. Can I play it right now for your listeners?’ ” The station managers couldn’t say no, and Ms. Swift’s march to the top of the charts had begun.

I like that.

I like the bravado.  To just ask upfront may seem naive (which I’m sure to a degree it is), but it also shows balls.  Yes, of course there are many reasons why experience is necessary, and I deeply believe in the value of experience, but…sometimes you just have to have some balls.

"font-size:small;">Check out the full article here, some other good stories from Michael Moritz (Sequoia Capital), Robin Reed (executive headhunter), Gensler (Architecture firm), and more.

And yes, here’s a little love for Ms. Swift…

GigMaven welcomes…

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Hello all –

The GigMaven team has a new member — me! My name is Peter Enestrom and I’ve joined the company in a strategy/consulting role that will allow me to impact the mission and direction of GigMaven. I’ve been following GigMaven since its creation, both as an artist (I’m a producer/DJ) and a friend (I k
now CEO Howard Han from my days at Yale). I’ve always been extremely intrigued by GigMaven’s mission to eliminate the inefficiencies of finding/booking gigs in the music world. Thus, I’m ecstatic to be on-board.

To provide a little information about myself, I grew up in Australia and have been playing in bands and DJing in clubs since my teenage years. I spent my university years in the United States at Yale, where I pursued my love for music in an academic capacity while also driving my creative passions by producing music for several independent films and various hip-hop groups.

I have spent my entire career (all two-and-a-half years) at Microsoft, where I’ve been managing the search and display advertising accounts of various Fortune 500 companies, such as Apple and Visa. My interests in online technology and music have led me to GigMaven, where I will continue to work at in a part-time capacity when I join Columbia’s MBA Class of 2011 in the fall of this year (see below for a shot of me enjoying some fine NYC pizza). Outside of work, I’m currently finishing my band’s first album and am attempting to improve my surfing skills.

I believe GigMaven has enormous potential and I will be working with various bands, DJs, promoters, venues, and music publishers over the coming months to garner a better understanding of what these groups are looking for and how GigMaven can best connect the dots.

One project we are looking out is a DJ booking interface. My own experiences as a DJ have illuminated the inefficiencies in booking. For example, venues and promoters want ready access to mixes, availability, and the DJ’s ability to bring a crowd through the door.

Conversely, DJ’s will be able to find gigs outside their human network and maximize their playing time, which will prove particularly helpful in that they are able to play multiple gigs in a night (unlike most bands). Some other things we’re looking at are integrating promoters into the GigMaven model, where they would be able to solicit DJs and book for events, and partnering with various online music sites. There is certainly plenty to do!

As a shameless plug, be sure to check out my band, The Vanish. You can also check out some videos I’ve helped produce with friends, such as the ‘Mac or PC’ rap music video that has been featured on the homepages of YouTube and Yahoo (see below).

Until later…

Pete

YouTube, UMG to create Vivo (Hulu for music videos)

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009
The Wall Street Journal reported today that Youtube and UMG are discussing a partnership where YouTube would build a new hub for music videos.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the labels couldn’t get along and create a Hulu for music videos that I mentioned a while back, but I’m interested to see how the others react to UMG and YouTube now that they’re being left out.  The article I read says that they still may fall apart so we will see how this progresses.

Conceptually, this makes sense as music videos are a huge part of YouTube, so congrats to Google for working for a way to take advantage of that.  Shame on the labels for not doing it themselves.

169 Bar on Flight of the Conchords

Monday, March 2nd, 2009
Hey GigMaveners!

If you don’t watch Flight of the Conchords, I would really recommend giving it a shot. In one recent episode, Bret buys a new tea cup, as he is tired taking turns drinking tea with Jemaine. However, this $2.79 spending spree sends their budget into a deficit, forcing them to sell their instruments to pay off the debt. Pictured is Jemaine (left) and Bret (right) playing a gig at our very own 169 Bar in New York!
